You'll swear you've been unknowingly teleported to Greece when you see the ancient temples in Agrigento, Sicily.
The outdoor archaeological park Valley of the Temples, or Valle dei Templi, has 7 spectacular Greek temples from the 6th and 5th century B.C. (see photo above of the Temple of Concord). The site also has ruins of other temples, houses, streets, and an amphitheatre. And if you don't go into archaeological overload, it's worth visiting the Archaeological Museum in Agrigento.
My number 1 tip - apart from just visiting the site - is to go back at night. The temples are lit up and are just beautiful.
Some other tips:
- Though you can see it from the road, the site is visited on foot, so wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and allow a full day.
- I don't recommend going in the summer (May - Aug), it's too hot to be walking around outdoors, and there is very little shade.
- If you're there in February, don't miss the almond-blossom festival, with parades, concerts and fireworks.
